kubectl get nodes - The connection was refused

10/23/2018
  • Running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS in a Virtual Box virtual machine
  • I seem to have the same issue as reported here on SO

I installed this a few days ago and all was well. I could connect via kubectl no problems. However now when I do the following:

$ kubectl get nodes
The connection to the server 192.168.40.101:6443 was refused - did you specify the right host or port?

UPDATE: Added environment settings.

$ echo $KUBECONFIG

$ kubectl config view
apiVersion: v1
clusters:
- cluster:
    certificate-authority-data: DATA+OMITTED
    server: https://192.168.40.101:6443
  name: kubernetes
contexts:
- context:
    cluster: kubernetes
    user: kubernetes-admin
  name: kubernetes-admin@kubernetes
current-context: kubernetes-admin@kubernetes
kind: Config
preferences: {}
users:
- name: kubernetes-admin
  user:
    client-certificate-data: REDACTED
    client-key-data: REDACTED
$ kubectl get pods

Even if I set the variable explicitly to the config file in my home directory which is:

$ ls -l .kube/config
-rw------- 1 someuser someuser 5450 Oct 15 21:58 .kube/config

it makes no difference. The 'kubectl config view' still returns the same data (as no KUBECONFIG variable setting looks for a config file in the above location by default)

The firewall is also off:

$ sudo ufw status
Status: inactive

I can see kubelet is still OK:

$ systemctl status kubelet
● kubelet.service - kubelet: The Kubernetes Node Agent
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/kubelet.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
  Drop-In: /etc/systemd/system/kubelet.service.d
           └─10-kubeadm.conf
   Active: active (running) since Mon 2018-10-15 21:46:55 AEDT; 1 weeks 1 days ago

It does not appear the apiserver is running:

but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to check that the kube-apiserver is running (via service check or similair) as this is what I guess is causing the issue?

Update: Seems API Server is failing because of etcd

Digging into the docker logs:

So:

  1. Why is etcd failing inside Docker?
  2. On an Ubuntu machine how do I figure out if all the k8s bits are running?
  3. How do I further troubleshoot this issue? (so I can get kubectl talking to the cluster again)

I have same issue and was able to fix it.

Use the below command to disable swap temporary, but if your system reboots, issue will re-occurs

sudo -i
swapoff -a

Permanent fix is to remove the swap entry from /etc/fstab Edit vim /etc/fstab
